Different Types Of Hockey
There are many types of hockey such as bandy, field hockey, ice hockey and rink hockey. In most of the world, the term hockey by itself refers to field hockey, while in Canada, the United States, Russia and most of Eastern and Northern Europe, the term usually refers to ice hockey.
BANDY — Historical relationship with association football and ice hockey — Bandy is a team winter sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a ball into the opposing team’s goal. The sport is considered a form of hockey and has a common background with ice hockey and field hockey.
-Bandy was introduced to Sweden in 1895. The Swedish royal family, noblemen and diplomats were the first players. Swedish championships for men have been played annually since 1907. In the 1920s students played the game and it became a largely middle class sport.
FIELD HOCKEY — Field hockey, also called hockey, outdoor game played by two opposing teams of 11 players each who use sticks curved at the striking end to hit a small, hard ball into their opponent’s goal. It is called field hockey to distinguish it from the similar game played on ice.
The origins of field hockey can be traced to ancient Egypt, Persia, and Greece; but the game as we know it, was developed in the British Isles in the late 19th century. In 1901, field hockey was brought to the United States by an English woman, Constance M.K. Applebee.

- Roller hockey (in British English), rink hockey (in American English) or quad hockey is a team sport played on roller skates. Two five-man teams (four skaters and one goalkeeper) try to drive the ball with their sticks into the opponents’ goal. The ball can only be put in motion by a stick, not the skate, otherwise a foul will be stated. The game has two 25-minute halves, with 15-minute halftime intermission, plus up to two 5-minute golden goal (a.k.a. “sudden death”) periods to settle ties with the clock stopping when the ball becomes dead. If the tie persists, a penalty shootout will determine the winner.
Players — including the goalie — use quad skates, whereas inline skates are used in inline hockey. Excessive contact between players is forbidden in rink hockey, unlike inline hockey.
Roller Hockey was a demonstration roller sport in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. There have been 44 editions of the Roller Hockey World Cup. Countries with the most world titles since the 1940s are: Spain (17 World titles), Portugal (16 World titles), Argentina (5 World titles) and Italy (4 World titles). Other countries, such as France, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Andorra and England are regular international competitors, but rarely overcome the traditional powers.
ICE HOCKEY — The origins of ice hockey have long been debated. In 2008, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) officially declared that the first game of organized ice hockey was played in Montreal in 1875. Many also consider ice hockey’s first rules to have been published by the Montreal Gazette in 1877.
